HEIs can choose which edition to copy from – there is no obligation to copy from the latest edition.
However, as in line with Clause 3.4.4(ii) and page 15 of the HE Licence User Guide, an HEI cannot use different editions of the same book to make copies as they would then breach extent limits:
You can choose any edition to copy from; and you cannot combine extracts from different editions of the same title, because the extent limit applies to the work as a whole. For a single course, you must ensure that all extracts used comes from the same edition.
e.g.
If an HEI were to take a chapter from Edition 7 and then another chapter (or even a few pages) from Edition 8 for the same course, these would collectively breach the extent limit because they come from the same underlying publication.
Running an HEI Report will help you determine if you’ve already copied from an earlier edition of the same title (just do a keyword search on the title). You can also use the search option on the DCS dashboard.
